Living Independently by Laura Long

I am Laura Long and I have CP. I can't walk or use my hands and I can't talk without using my communication device. I have my own apartment in Emeryville California with two roommates. They also work for me as my attendants. I attend the CP Center 5 days a week. I have a Powerbook computer and I use a head switch to operate it and other computers at the Center.

I have a pet rat named Matty. She is friendly and cute. When people come over they usually scream at the sight of Matty. I have a pretty busy life now! I do my own grocery shopping, banking, and laundry once a week. I live near a movie theater so I go to movies often.

I hired my own attendants and roommates. Right now I am looking for two new roommates because mine are moving out. I am feeling depressed about it. Money is a huge issue for people like me who live independently in their apartments.

I am going to Seattle in a couple weeks with my roommate.

I have attendants who assist me with every day chores and personal care. They are doing my cooking, laundry, and cleaning up my apartment.

I have my van that my attendants use to drive me to places that I want to go like cafes and restaurants, and parks for walks. I also like to listen to music and books on tapes, go to concerts and I like writing and being around my family and friends. I like playing with my rat Matty and I like to watch T.V.

I am really grateful to lead such a wonderful life.
